Getting an edge in your weight loss competition

Losing weight is hard... here's how to get started.

For most people, including myself, it's really hard to figure out how to begin losing weight. There are a few simple things you can do to create a structure to help you get started on your journey to get healthier and shed a few pounds. Read on for some of the items that were crucial for my path in losing weight.

Withings+ WiFi Scale ($95)

The most critical piece to your weight loss journey is being able to weigh yourself daily and track how your weight is changing over time - within and outside of your Competish. Being connected to your weight over time is critical to understanding how a night out with friends or a massive workout increases or decreases your weight. The more often you weigh in, the more attuned you are to the normal rhythm of changes to your body. On some days, I may weigh myself 3 or 4 times - especially after a big meal!

FitBit Charge 4 ($140)

The next most important item I own is a smart watch to understand how much I am moving during a regular day. With the FitBit, you can challenge yourself to a certain amount of activity (e.g., steps) or exercise (e.g., 30 minutes) and track how close you are to achieving your goals. Exercise is so important to your energy levels and mental health - the FitBit can be an added piece of motivation to push yourself forward, even when you're exhausted.

Food Journal ($9)

The say abs are made in the kitchen - not the gym - and my weight loss journey proves the point. A food journal forces you to be diligent in tracking the foods and beverages you consume. There are plenty of days where when I recap what I ate, I'll forget about the cookie or soda I had - writing everything in a food journal throughout the day is the best way to ensure you're accurately recording the calories you're consuming. Plus - when you're forced to write it down, you may just second guess that extra serving!

Purchase

S'well Water Bottle ($26)

The final item I recommend getting is a water bottle. Not only does being hydrated help with your lethargy, it also can help reduce your feelings of hunger. Whenever I feel like snacking, I drink 8-12 ounces of water and then wait 20 minutes. Most times, my hunger dissipates instantly! Carrying around a water bottle ensures that you'll reach for water instead of a snack. Generally, doctors recommend between 12 and 15 cups per day - so having a big water bottle will help you hit your consumption targets.
